We run a 2024 Sea-Doo Switch Sport as our primary rental and we get asked about it a lot. People aren't always familiar with the Switch — it's a relatively new category of boat — so here's the honest breakdown of what it is, who it's great for, and what to expect.
What Is the Sea-Doo Switch?
The Sea-Doo Switch is a pontoon jet boat. It has the platform and seating layout of a traditional pontoon but instead of a outboard motor hanging off the back, it uses a jet propulsion system — the same technology you find in a Sea-Doo personal watercraft. No propeller in the water. No lower unit to damage in shallow areas. Just a clean, flush hull with a jet nozzle.
The 230hp Sport Version
Ours is the Sport variant with 230 horsepower. That's a meaningful amount of power for a pontoon-style boat. It gets up on plane quickly, runs about 40–45 mph at full throttle, and has enough pull to tow a tube or wakeboard without struggling. If you're used to underpowered pontoons that can barely drag a tube, this is a different experience.
Why Families Love It
The platform layout is genuinely family-friendly. The lounge seating wraps around the bow and stern, there's a full double bimini cover for shade, and the boarding platform is at water level so getting in and out of the lake is easy for kids and adults. No climbing over a high transom or worrying about an outboard motor.
The jet propulsion also means there's no propeller to worry about — a real safety advantage when you have kids swimming around the boat. You can anchor, swim, and let kids jump off the side without the stress of a spinning prop in the water.
What It's Great For
- Family lake days — Lounge, swim, tube, relax. It does all of this well.
- Tubing and light wakeboarding — 230hp is enough to pull adults and kids with ease.
- Cruising — Comfortable at slower speeds for sightseeing and fishing.
- Groups — Rated for 8 passengers. Practically seats 5–6 adults comfortably for a full day.
What It's Not
It's not a dedicated wakeboard boat. The wake profile is different from a V-drive or direct drive inboard — if you're an advanced wakeboarder looking for a big clean wake, this isn't the right tool. For casual tubing and beginner to intermediate boarding it works great. For competitive wakeboarding, you'd want a different boat.
