Saratoga Springs is one of the fastest growing cities in Utah — and for good reason. It sits on the southwest shore of Utah Lake with easy access to the Wasatch Front, the Oquirrh Mountains, and some genuinely underappreciated outdoor recreation. Here's what to do if you're here.
Boating and Watersports on Utah Lake
The most obvious outdoor activity and the one most people don't take full advantage of. Utah Lake is right here — massive, improving, and underused compared to reservoirs further from the valley. Good boat ramps at Saratoga Springs Marina and at several other points around the lake. Fishing, tubing, wakeboarding, and casual lake cruising are all solid options. See our Utah Lake piece for more detail on current conditions.
Timpanogos Cave National Monument
About 40 minutes northeast of Saratoga Springs, Timpanogos Cave sits high on the north face of American Fork Canyon. The cave tour involves a 1.5-mile hike up the canyon wall (about 1,000 feet of elevation gain) and then a guided tour through three connected caves full of helictites, stalactites, and crystal formations. Book tickets in advance — they sell out fast on summer weekends.
Pony Express Trail and Tooele Valley Riding
The historic Pony Express Trail runs across the desert west of Utah Lake and there's excellent mountain biking and horseback riding along sections of it. The Oquirrh Mountain trail network above Saratoga Springs and Herriman is also worth exploring — it's built up significantly in recent years with well-maintained singletrack.
Five-Mile Pass OHV Area
If you have an ATV, dirt bike, or side-by-side, Five-Mile Pass OHV area is about 30 minutes south of Saratoga Springs near Fairfield. One of the best OHV areas along the Wasatch Front — large open desert riding with marked trails of varying difficulty.
Deer Creek and Provo Canyon
About 40 minutes northeast, the Provo River Parkway trail follows the river from Provo Canyon down to Utah Lake. Great for cycling, walking, and fishing. Deer Creek Reservoir at the top of the canyon is excellent for boating and fishing. The canyon itself is one of the most scenic drives in the state.
Rock Canyon and Squaw Peak Road
East of Provo, Rock Canyon offers approachable hiking trails into the Wasatch with dramatic views back over Utah Valley. Squaw Peak Road climbs high above the valley for sweeping panoramas — a local favorite for sunset drives and moderate hiking.
Planning a Water Day From Saratoga Springs
If you're centered in Saratoga Springs for a day on the water, Utah Lake is the obvious choice for convenience. For a longer adventure, Deer Creek (40 min), Jordanelle (45 min), and even Strawberry Reservoir (90 min) are all reasonable day trips. We're located right here in Saratoga Springs — pickup is easy, launch is easy, and you're on the water in under 20 minutes.
