DIY Home Projects in Utah? Don't Forget the Truck

Most DIY projects need a truck at some point. Lumber, concrete, appliances, demo debris — here's how a one-day truck rental fits into home improvement season.

Home improvement projects have a way of stalling the moment you realize your car can't handle what you need to haul. Lumber, concrete bags, pavers, tile, appliances — this is all truck territory. Renting for a day or two eliminates the bottleneck without the overhead of ownership.

Projects That Need a Truck

Deck Building

Even a modest 12x16 deck requires a lot of lumber. 2x6 boards, 4x4 posts, joist hangers, concrete tube forms, bags of concrete. You're looking at multiple loads in a car. One trip in a truck with a 6-foot bed and you're set. The X31 package on Blanco also means you can get to projects on uneven terrain without issue.

Landscaping and Hardscaping

A yard of topsoil or mulch weighs around 1,000–1,200 lbs. Half-ton trucks are rated for 1,500–2,000 lbs of payload — you can typically haul a full yard in one trip. Pavers, gravel, retaining wall block — all much easier with a truck bed than repeated trips in a small vehicle.

Bathroom or Kitchen Demo

Demo generates more debris than you expect. Tile, drywall, old cabinets, fixtures — it adds up fast and it's heavy. A truck makes the demo-to-dump portion of a remodel a one-trip problem rather than a weekend of car runs.

Appliance Swap

Getting a new refrigerator, range, or washer/dryer delivered is usually fine. Getting the old ones out of your house is your problem. A truck, a dolly, and a friend solve this in 30 minutes.

Fencing

Fence posts, rails, panels — cedar or vinyl, it doesn't fit in a sedan. A truck makes picking up materials from a home improvement store practical.

Tips for Hauling Building Materials

Home Depot vs. Lumber Yard

For most DIY projects in Utah Valley, the Home Depot in Lehi or American Fork will have what you need. For better pricing on larger quantities of dimensional lumber, a local lumber yard like Contractor's Building Supply is worth checking. Both are easily accessible and have large lots for loading with a truck.

Blanco books through Turo — straightforward online reservation, pickup in Saratoga Springs, and you're on your way. A truck for the day costs less than a single delivery fee from most suppliers.
